NUTS AND SEEDS

As more people seek healthier food choices, nut and seed consumption is on the rise. Health benefits of the oils in nuts and seeds play an important role in wound healing, detoxification reactions, immune functions and promotion of the secretion of several hormones. According to some studies it may even exert a relaxing effect on blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow.

Because of the high oil content of nuts and seeds, one would suspect that frequent consumption of nuts would increase the rate of obesity. But in a large population study of 27,000 people, it was found that the people who consumed the most nuts were less obese. Nuts produces satiety. This same study also demonstrated that higher nut consumption was associated with a protective effect against heart attacks and heart disease. Other studies have shown nuts to protect against type 2 diabetes.

Nuts and seeds provide excellent human nutrition, being especially good sources of essential fatty acids, vitamin E, protein and minerals. Buying the nuts and seeds in the shell is the closest to nature.

SPRING CLEANING

Spring is a time to open the windows, pull back the curtains, let out the stale air of a winter’s hibernation. Let the sunshine and fresh air renew our spirit to take on our once a year spring cleaning.

House cleaning
The quality of the environment inside our homes is only one factor in maintaining good health. Just a few pointers:

Have a look in your house and choose non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaners.

Seriously question yourself if you really need those five TV’s and four computers, two microwaves, four video games … you get the picture.

Have a look in your basement or around your windows for new visitors that may have grown this winter.

What about those fifteen year old carpets or pillows?

The inside of your car may need a good scrubbing too. Visitors can grow there too.

What about your body?

No matter how hard we try to exercise and eat right in the winter, our bodies seem to slow down anyway. Spring is a great time to cleanse it and take out the cobwebs. Make a plan. Cleansing with food is the best method. Lots and lots of filtered or purified water. Juicing with high antioxidant fruits and vegetables is a great start. This does not mean that you deprive your body of food. Decide if you prefer a series of short cleanses or a longer cleanses. Everyone is unique. Find what is right for you. Consult a registered nutritionist for a plan that will fit your needs.
