Eating well, eating safe

Salads Preparation

In today’s society, life is like a rollercoaster, very fast paced. We often don’t take the time to take proper care of our food preparations.

Salads often include raw vegetables and fruits, which may contain hosts in the form of parasites and other undesirable microorganisms. To remove these, soak all greens, roots, fruits, and other produce to be eaten raw in a mild solution of apple cider vinegar for 15 minutes. Use one tablespoon vinegar per gallon of soak water or ¼ cup vinegar in a sinkfull.

Hydrogen peroxide also removes parasites, and denatures the poison sprays found on non-organic produce more effectively than vinegar. Though more costly, it is ideal because of its effectiveness and purity. One may use regular hydrogen peroxide; convenient quart or gallon sizes can be ordered at drug stores. Soak fruits and vegetables for 20 minutes in a sink full of water to which ¼ cup 3% HP is added; or use 1 tablespoon 3% HP per gallon of soak water. A quicker method is to spray 3% HP on produce, wait a minute or two, then rinse.
