PARASITES
Traveling in foreign countries to catch up on your sunshine? Here is a word of caution. Intestinal parasites, or worms (there are various types of these) can be picked up while visiting foreign or unfamiliar locations and/or from eating undercooked meat. They may cause unexplained diarrhea, fever and chills, abdominal distress, indigestion, gas, or bloating. Other symptoms can include irritable intestinal tract, recently developed food allergies or environmental illness, frequent colds or flu, ravenous apetite, anal itching at night, weight loss or inability to gain weight, changeable bowel movements, and feelings of rectal fullness or pressure. Some homeopathic formulas are used as preventative when traveling. If you decide to travel with no precautionary measure and you get these symptoms, drink bottled water with a good squeeze of lemon or lime for 24 hours. At the end of 24 hours eat a bowl of plain cooked rice. Upon return make sure you consult with a registered nutritionist that will guide you through a parasite cleanse. These cleanses can take up to 8 weeks. Prevention is the best medicine. OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS AND WOMEN'S HEALTH
While omega-3 fatty acids have a powerful effect on tryglyceride levels of both sexes, women in particular gain from an increased intake of these essential fatty acids. Recent research shows that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids might also help prevent preeclampsia, postpartum depression. menopausal problems, postmenopausal osteoporosis, and breast cancer. Scientists recommend women receiving hormone therapy increase their omega-3 fatty acid intake because hormone therapy can increase triglyceride levels. Just as women go through menopause and a decline in the hormones estrogen and progesterone around the age of 50, men go through a more gradual but equally age-related decline in hormones which is sometimes called 'andropause'. By the age of 50 many men have had some degree of prostate problems and by the age of 75, more than 50 percent of men have impotence problems. Taking in consideration that some of these problems may be caused by poor circulation as well as many other factors we cannot deny the fact that another factor is what we eat. Anything that increases estrogen levels in men will create a corresponding drop or suppression of testosterone and other important hormones secreted by the adrenal glands. Some ways that men may unwittingly create a rise in estrogen levels include excessive alcohol, using pesticides and solvents, eating a lot of non-organic red meat from livestock that has been fed estrogens. Lack of libido is most often due to a decline in male hormones or sometimes caused by taking prescribed drugs. Cocaine, marijuana, alcohol and smoking can all contribute to impotence. Marijuana can actually cause a drop in testosterone levels. Because fat cells make estrogen, obese men will also tend to have higher estrogen levels which leads to an imbalancement.
